JoJo's Story

A Journey to Wellness

I am a 56-year-old Mainer who loves anything to do with fitness and adventure. As an active ager, I am passionate about flipping the lens on how we see and approach the aging process. My 25 years working as an Occupational Therapist taught me why we, as a society, can and need to be more proactive and less reactive to the potential challenges of aging. Exercise, sleep, nutrition and stress reduction are the key component to wellness and as we age, these four pillars of wellness are the keys to allowing us to thrive and live with vitality. Therefore I strive to integrate all of these aspects into my work as a fitness instructor, personal trainer and Occupational Therapist.

My love of fitness started as a teenager while growing up in western Maine where the great outdoors was my backyard. My interest in wellness began at Wheaton College when I interned as a wellness and fitness coordinator. I then went on to pursue a Master’s in Occupational Therapy and focused on restorative exercise and functional ability.

In 2018, I found myself increasingly unwell due to the mounting pressures of my career choices in healthcare. In 2019, I made the difficult decision to shift my priorities to put my own health first and make a career change. During this pause is my career, I had the opportunity to travel to Africa and fulfill a bucket-list item to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Leading up to the hike, we trained in the mountains of Maine and one of our team members was a 75-year man. I was impressed by his tenacity and drive to set himself to succeed. His moment at the summit of Kilimanjaro brought me more joy than my own final footsteps to the summit.

This moment in time helped solidify my choice for my next career. I wanted to help others reach their fitness goals and to live their adventures, no matter their age or abilities. My skills as a personal trainer and Occupational Therapist provide me a unique lens in which to help people where they are in their journey and set goals for their future.

In my spare time, I enjoy hiking and running. My favorite moments are those spent with family, friends and my four-legged fur-baby, Linden, who is our “Lobby Doggy” at Kettle Cove Fitness.
